Industry watchers have long referred to ChatGPT as a substitute for obtaining Internet data, despite the fact that it has had difficulty delivering precise and current Web data. Previously, OpenAI integrated it with Microsoft Bing for subscribers who paid for access. Google, meanwhile, has shown generative AI capabilities for its own engine with the same name.

Rumor: In order to supplement ChatGPT, OpenAI plans to introduce its own search engine.

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGTP, is reportedly on the cusp of announcing its own search product to rival Google search and AI-powered search startup Perplexity.

Bloomberg reports that OpenAI could go live with its new search as soon as next Monday, May 13, a day before Google’s I/O conference kicks off. Google is expected to announce several AI-related products.

As an addition to ChatGPT, OpenAI’s search engine will allow it to retrieve up-to-date, accurate material from the web along with citations. This solves one of the most common criticisms of ChatGPT: its outdated information.

OpenAI’s search product seems very similar to startup Perplexity’s solution – an AI-native search interface with citations, images and text. Perplexity, now valuated at around $1 billion, was founded by a trio of engineers – Aravind Srinivas, who worked at OpenAI, Denis Yarats, who was at Meta, and Johnny Ho, formerly of Quora.
