The social media behemoth is vying with tech behemoths like Google and Microsoft and upstarts like OpenAI to take the lead in the artificial intelligence arms race, and meta AI is a component of that aggressive drive into generative AI.

According to Moneycontrol, Facebook parent company Meta is testing its AI chatbot, Meta AI, with a limited group of Indian customers across a number of its apps, including Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. Instagram has enabled Meta AI via the direct messaging function of the platform.

Like Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT, users can reach it by pressing the Meta AI symbol in the search bar. From there, they can engage directly with the chatbot, which acts as a general-purpose assistant that can respond to a variety of queries, including those pertaining to real-time information.
In addition to providing the solution, the assistant includes a link to the page where the precise query may be searched on Google and cites the sources used to get the answer in a footnote.

In addition, one may produce text and graphics, condense lengthy texts, assist with writing assignments like editing and proofreading, translate texts across languages, and produce poetry and stories, among other things.

As the business competes to be a major participant in the AI race with industry giants like Google, Microsoft, and upstarts like OpenAI, it claimed it is integrating these capabilities into its applications—Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger—used by over 3 billion people daily. A proprietary AI model that utilizes technologies from the company’s open-source Llama 2 large language model (LLM) powers Meta AI.

In order to obtain advice or ask inquiries, users may now summon an assistant into their current Instagram group and personal conversations. For example, one may ask for suggestions for a trip to go as a group or for ideas for meals to serve at a dinner party, and it will respond with possibilities right in the conversation. To have a conversation with the chatbot, simply input “@” and then hit Meta AI.

Many users have shared screenshots of Meta’s chatbot on X, the social networking site that was once known as Twitter. Meta has also begun testing the chatbot in WhatsApp. A representative for Meta stated in a statement, “We’re testing a range of our generative AI-powered experiences publicly in a limited capacity while they’re under development in different phases.”
