Understaffed Leverkusen Takes on Stung Leipzig in a Hard Test

With a game remaining and trailing by four points, Harry Kane's Bayern are in danger of closing the gap on Leverkusen, who are looking to win their first-ever Bundesliga championship.

On Saturday, Xabi Alonso’s undefeated Bayer Leverkusen will visit RB Leipzig, a team reeling from a previous-round loss, in one of their hardest remaining tests of the season. Leipzig suffered their first league home loss of the season last weekend against Eintracht Frankfurt, hoping to protect their place in the top four from a chasing Borussia Dortmund. On Thursday, Marco Rose, the manager of Leipzig, stated that “the defeat against Frankfurt really bothered us” and he urged his team to fight back against the league leaders.

In recent seasons, the Red Bull Arena has transformed into a stronghold for the German Cup winners who have won thrice.

Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, and Manchester City have all experienced defeat in Saxony, while Bayern Munich hasn’t triumphed there in the league since 2021.

With a game remaining and trailing by four points, Harry Kane’s Bayern are in danger of closing the gap on Leverkusen, who are looking to win their first-ever Bundesliga championship.

On Saturday, Leverkusen nearly gave some points away against Augsburg, but

Exequiel Palacios, the World Cup winner, scored in the fourth minute of injury time to give Leverkusen a narrow 1-0 victory late on Saturday against Augsburg, despite three players being abroad on AFCON duty and striker Victor Boniface sidelined until April.

Rose is aware of the threat that Alonso’s Leverkusen offer, even in the absence of several first-team players.

In a Thursday compliment, Rose referred to Alonso as “a great guy, but above all a winner (who) passes that winning gene on to his players.”

Leipzig, the first Bundesliga team to play Leverkusen under Alonso’s new look this season, lost 3-2 on the road in the first round, barely one week after defeating Bayern 3-0 in Munich to win the Supercup.

Striker Lois Openda of Leipzig concurred with his coach during a Wednesday interview with AFP and other media.

“Xabi Alonso was a top player, a top midfielder, with quality passing and assists,” the Belgian stated.

“As a coach he’s also good, what he’s doing now with Leverkusen, it’s top.”

If Leverkusen loses, Bayern, who play Werder Bremen on Sunday, will gain the most.

Bayern has an incredible record against the green and whites. They haven’t lost since 2008, when a youthful Mesut Ozil scored twice and assisted on another in a 5-2 victory over Bremen.

Dortmund, who trail fourth-place Leipzig by three points, will visit Cologne, who are second worst in the league and have just won twice this season.

Dortmund has only triumphed twice in their last eight meetings in the cathedral city, but Jadon Sancho, who is back, has a strong record against Cologne, having contributed two assists and two goals in four contests.

Always keep an eye on Lois Openda (RB Leipzig).

Leipzig forward Lois Openda has been so good since moving from Lens in the summer that it’s easy to forget the German Cup winners lost Christopher Nkunku in the same window.

In 17 league games for Leipzig, as well as four in six Champions League matches, Openda has 11 goals and 4 assists.

Even at age 22, the blazingly quick Openda pledged to “do more” and explained to AFP and other media on Wednesday that he made the swift change because “I feel like I’m at home here”.

“I know I’m young and I want to be better, to score goals every game and top be the top scorer.”
