Netanyahu responds to US President Biden's threat to halt arms shipments, saying he "can stand alone, fight with fingernails."

Israel-Gaza War: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Thursday that Israel can “stand alone” and “fight with fingernails” if necessary, a day after US President Joe Biden threatened to cut off arms sales to Israel if it began a significant ground operation in Rafah.

“We’re going to stand by ourselves if necessary. He was cited by the BBC as saying, “I have said that if necessary, we will fight with our fingernails.” A bomb shipment has previously been stopped by the US due to concerns about innocent casualties. Netanyahu disregarded Washington’s warnings on Thursday, meanwhile, by drawing comparisons to the 1948 conflict.

“In the War of Independence, 76 years ago, we were the few against the many,” stated he. “We were without firearms. Israel was subject to a weapons embargo, but because to our collective bravery, solidarity, and strong will, we prevailed,” Netanyahu stated, as cited by the BBC. He said that if the US President halted weaponry supply, Israel would have “much more than our fingernails”.

This news was announced by the UN just hours after the BBC estimated that over 80,000 people have left Rafah due to nonstop shelling since Monday. The UN added that because supplies at adjacent crossings had been suspended, food and gasoline were running low for those still taking refuge in the city.

Israel earlier advanced tanks into the southern city of Rafah and took control of the neighboring Egyptian border, which has been a vital entrance point for humanitarian supplies and the sole way out for those who have been allowed to escape since the start of the conflict in October of last year.

For the first time, Joe Biden declared on Wednesday that he would stop arming Israel in the event if Netanyahu issued an order for a significant assault of Rafah.

The US President said in a CNN interview that people in Gaza had been killed by weapons Washington has given to Israel. “Those bombs and other ways they target population centers have resulted in the deaths of civilians in Gaza,” he added. “I’m not supplying the weapons that have been used historically to deal with Rafah, to deal with the cities – that deal with that problem,” Biden stated, “even though they haven’t gone into Rafah yet.”
