Earthquake of magnitude 7.01 strikes Kyrgyzstan-China border region; tremors felt in Delhi-NCR

According to GFZ, the depth of the earthquake was 10 km (6.21 miles).

A 7.01 – magnitude earthquake was recorded near the Kyrgyz -Xinjiang border region, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
GFZ reports that the earthquake was felt down to a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles). The 7.01-magnitude earthquake struck China’ s Xinjiang province, 140 kilometers west of the city of Aksu, at a depth of 27 kilometers (17 miles). It happened shortly after 2:00 am (1800 GMT Monday).

Significant tremors were felt in New Delhi, even though it was 1,400 kilometers away.

Similar quake measuring 6.7 was recorded by the emergency ministry in neighboring Kazakhstan, according to Reuters.

Despite the cold, people in Kazakhstan’s biggest city, Almaty, left their houses and gathered outside. A few of them were wearing slippers and pajamas.

 

The earthquakes and their aftershocks ,which happened around half an hour later , were also felt in Uzbekistan.

After that , three further earthquakes with magnitudes of 5.5, 5.1, and 5.0 were detected in the same area.

Although there had not been any initial reports of injuries in the rural, hilly area struck by the earthquake, the USGS raised the likelihood of them, according to AFP. “Significant damage is likely and the disaster is potentially widespread ,” the report stated.

This earthquake struck the day after a landslide in southwest China buried several people and killed at least eight.

In addition, a December earthquake in Gansu province, northwest China, left thousands of people homeless and killed 148 lives.
