NEW DELHI: Over 98% of the roughly 1,000 Vistara pilots have signed the new agreement for the same, despite growing dissatisfaction among them over lower pay as their airline prepares for a merger into Air India by year’s end. The low-cost airlines AIX Connect (formerly AirAsia India) and Air India Express are being combined by the Tata Group.

While the LCC merger is proceeding without incident, this is mostly because AIX Connect’s staff realized that merging was their airline’s last chance to survive. However, Vistara had been operating profitably, and the merger has left its staff members—particularly the pilots—disgruntled and disheartened. As a result, the airline had significant flight interruptions earlier this week.
Vistara CEO Vinod Kannan offered an apology and acknowledged the flight disruptions on Saturday. He said: “We have a crew that is sufficient for normal operations, but due to high utilization, we were challenged with operational disruption. We are addressing this on a war footing. keeping up the hiring of new pilots while cautiously reducing our operational footprint to provide the rosters the much-needed resiliency.
“In order to serve as many clients as possible, we have also introduced bigger aircraft, such as our Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and Airbus A321neo, on a few domestic routes. Our three days of increased on-time performance indicate that the situation has already improved. By this weekend, we aim to have stabilized our operations for the remainder of April 2024,” he stated.

“Over 98% of pilots have signed the new contract,” he stated, referring to the revised agreements that pilots must sign as Vistara gets ready to combine with AI. Nevertheless, we are aware that some pilots have questions and reservations about the contract. To address and resolve the same, we are interacting with them. But there hasn’t been a noticeable increase in pilot attrition as a result of this.
Pilots on Vistara used to receive a minimum of seventy hours of flying time per month. The new AI contract will lower the minimum to 40 hours in order to maintain parity with pilots there.
